Have you recently bought your first watch? Whether you are considering a purchase or already have a watch but are unsure about how to wear a watch, how tight should a watch be and where on your wrist to wear a watch, we have put together the FAQ just for you.

How to Wear a Watch

Watches come in different sizes, styles and shapes and can be worn as an elegant piece of jewelry or as a functional accessory. While you can wear the watch to any type of formal or informal gathering, it is important to ensure a comfortable fit.

How Tight Should a Watch Be ?

New watch wearers often wonder how tight should a watch be. The golden rule here is that the watch should not slide down or up for more than an inch when you move the arm. Ideally, there should be just enough space for one finger to be inserted between the watch band and the wrist. This is of particular significance if you are wearing oversized watches or bracelet-style watches that can look too large when they do not fit correctly.

When wearing formal clothing, ensure the watch fits snugly so that the suit jacket or cuff do not get caught up in the watch. One way to find out if the watch is too tight is to see if it leaves imprints on your wrist or results in an angry red mark. If you can fit more than one finger or several fingers beneath the watch strap, it means your watch is too loose.

Which Hand Should I Wear My Watch On?

Most people prefer to wear the watch on the non-dominant hand. This means, for right-handed people, wearing the watch on the left wrist is ideal and vice versa. Since a majority are right-handed, watchmakers typically design watches for the left wrist. The crowns of watches are placed on the right-hand side of the watch case, which makes it easier for right-handed people to wind it. If you are left-handed, you can find suitable options by browsing through our extensive list of watches.

Which Wrist Should I Wear My Watch On ?

The answer to where on your wrist to wear a watch is – as per your personal preference. One of the best ways to ensure maximum comfort and visibility is to ensure the watch is beside the wrist bone. Wearing it too low can make it difficult for you to work apart from making it more susceptible to movement. Wearing it on top of your wrist bone can create discomfort or pain. You can shift the position based on the watch size as well. Smaller profile watches are best suited for above the ulna position as compared to larger watches.

Additionally, you can consider shifting the position depending on the occasion. Wear the watch lower and closer to the hand when wearing a formal, slim-fit shirt. This will help prevent the cuffs from folding against the watch case. Note that the cuff or sleeve should mostly cover the watch when you are standing with the arms by your side. When bending your arms, the watch should peek slightly out of the shirt cuff. Avoid wearing the watch on the cuff at all cost!
