Omega Watch Brand History
The legacy of Omega starts all the way back in 1848, when a small-time watchmaker, Louis Brandt, decided to open a small workshop for making watches that championed accuracy above all else. He opened the doors of the watchmaking workshop in his village of La Chaux-de-Fonds on his family villa and it was here that the foundations for the Omega watch company, were set.
In 1879, after the demise of their father, Brandt’s sons – Louis-Paul and Cesar took over the business and renamed it Louis Brandt & Fils. It was their business acumen that put Omega on the national map. In 1880, the brothers moved the company headquarters to Biel/Bienne, where they released their very first series-produced caliber of watches, named “Labrador”.
Between the years of 1880 and 1884, the company manufactured the world’s first ever minute-repeating pocket watch, that repeated the hours and minutes on demand. Then, in 1884, the company made the extraordinarily advanced 19-linge OMEGA caliber watch was based on the Labrador design. Boasting of never-before-seen time keeping technologies, it was this specific model, that changed the course of the watchmaking industry forever. The model’s features of winding and setting the watch using the crown and stem are designs watchmakers use even today.
Following the excellent reception of the 19-linge OMEGA caliber, the company released their Omega logo, hosting the Greek God of Time, Chronos. The very next year, the watch received the Grand Prize in the 1900 Universal Exposition in Paris for its outstanding technological achievement. The success of the watch prompted the company to rename themselves and they became - Louis Brandt et Frère - Omega Watch & Co.
A Journey Into Sports
In 1905, Omega served as the official timekeeper for various sporting events in Switzerland – including the Gordon Bennet Cup, which was the world’s most competitive hot air balloon race. Its popularity stemmed from its incredible accuracy and precision and soon, Omega watches were shipped to six different continents. In 1925, the company created a new art deco-inspired series of watches, for which won the Grand Prize at the International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts.
In 1931, the company broke world records when it passed various stringent tests organized by the Geneva Observatory. The same year, Omega again revolutionized the world of watchmaking by introducing automatic movement to improve winding efficiency. This is industry-standard today. Then in 1932, Omega became the very first watchmaker to time the entire Olympic Games during the Los Angeles Olympics.
It’s stint in the Olympics prompted Omega to create world’s first commercial watches for diving & water sports – Omega Marine. In 1936, the company enlisted the help of Alfred Jaccard, who helped adjust Omega watch precision to 97.8/100 – a record that still stands today. In 1937, the company released the Omega Medicus, which was the first watch to feature a seconds hand – a pivotal feature useful during World War II.
In 1946, Omega made news again, for releasing the Tubogas – a model cast in 18K red gold. In 1947, the company developed the world’s first tourbillion movements, which reduced the impact of gravity on time keeping. By 1948, Omega worked with Race Finish Recording to introduce photoelectric cell technology into watchmaking to create the first electronic watch – Omega Racend Timer. Simultaneously, Omega launched its Seamaster – which is even today, one of the most rugged watches, perfect for all altitudes.
Between the years of 1951 and 2020, came many of Omega’s aesthetically and functionally brilliant models, such as -Constellation, Calibre 321, Ladymatic, Speedmaster (aka Moonwatch – which was sent on the Mercury Sigma Mission into space), Railmaster, De Ville, Concorde SST, Seamaster Ulta-Light, Seamaster Diver 300M and Marine Chronometer. During this time, the watchmaker has been the primary time keeper for many arctic explorations, Olympic editions, PGA Championships, space explorations, Hollywood movies and world-changing political events.
